MINSK, 21 April (BelTA) - Belarusian Pavel Hlinchuk has won a bronze medal at the 2026 European Wrestling Championships in Tirana, Albania, BelTA has learned.
Competing in the heaviest weight category of up to 130kg, Pavel Hlinchuk started the tournament with victories over athletes from Sweden and Italy, before losing to wrestler Riza Kayaalp from Türkiye in the semifinal. In the bronze medal match, Pavel Hlinchuk defeated Russia’s Marat Kamparov (10:5). Last year, Pavel Hlinchuk won bronze at the World Championships; the Belarusian is a youth world champion.
Another Belarusian athlete, Ihar Yarashevich, came close to a medal (up to 87kg). At the start of the tournament, Yaroshevich defeated Serbia’s Aleksandr Komarov but lost in the quarterfinal to Denmark’s Turpal Ali Bisultanov. In the repechage round, Yaroshevich beat Armenia's Gevorg Tadevosyan but then lost the bronze medal match to Ukraine’s Yaroslav Filchakov.
On 22 April, Belarus’ Aliaksandr Liavonchyk will fight for bronze in the up to 72kg event. His opponent will be Armenia's Gaspar Terteryan. Kiryl Maskevich will compete in the repechage (up to 97kg), while Hleb Makaranka (up to 67kg) exited the tournament in the 1/8 finals. On 22 April, the women’s competition will begin at the European Championships in Albania. The tournament runs until 26 April.
