MINSK, 28 April (BelTA) – Belarusian tennis player Aryna Sabalenka did not make it to the semifinals of the WTA 1000 tournament in Madrid, an event with an $8.2 million prize fund, BelTA has learned.
In today’s quarterfinal match, the world number one faced world number 32 Hailey Baptiste of the USA and lost 6-2, 2-6, 6-7 (6-8). The match lasted 2 hours and 30 minutes. In the semifinal, Baptiste’s opponent will be Russian Mirra Andreeva (world number 8), who defeated Canadian Leylah Fernandez (World No. 25) 7-6 (7-1), 6-3.
In the opener, the Belarusian beat world number 43 Peyton Stearns of the USA, 7-5, 6-3, and then also won in two sets against Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian (World No. 33), 6-1, 6-4. In the Round of 16, the world number one defeated Japan’s world number 15 Naomi Osaka in a three-set match, 6-7 (1-7), 6-3, 6-2.
