Belarus’ statistics agency identifies five sectors with largest employment

MINSK, 28 April (BelTA) – The National Statistical Committee (Belstat) of Belarus has named the top five sectors with largest employment in the country in a statistical review dedicated to Labor Day, which is celebrated in Belarus on 1 May, BelTA has learned.

The average age of employed persons in 2025 was 42.5 years for women and 42.4 years for men.

The largest share of the population is employed in the private sector – 57.1%, while 38% work in the state sector. The top five economic activities employing Belarusians as of 2025 include industry (23.2%), wholesale and retail trade, repair of cars and motorcycles (13.4%), education (11%), agriculture, forestry and fisheries (9.9%), and healthcare and social services (8.3%).

In 2025, 62.7% of women and 37.2% of men were employed in the services industry. Men dominate the production – 67.9% compared to 32.1% for women.

In 2025, women accounted for 50.4% of those employed in Belarus’ economy, while men accounted for 49.6%. The majority are urban residents. The employment rate for the working-age population stands at 85.1%, with young people (aged 15-31) accounting for nearly 20% of the total workforce, including 11% in managerial positions.

The number of employed people in Belarus’ economy in March 2026 stood at 4,180,900.
