Lukashenko gets icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker as gift

SHKLOV DISTRICT, 12 April (BelTA) – Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko was presented with an icon during his visit to the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in the village of Yevdokimovichi in Shklov District on 12 April, BelTA has learned.
The icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker given to the president was painted in 2016 by the artist Yelena Rybakova. Her work can be seen both in the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker and at Trofimov’s Spring in the agrotown of Alexandria in Shklov District.

The icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker presented to the head of state is done in a canonical style on a linden wood panel. Gold leaf, natural tempera, and egg emulsion were used in painting the icon. St. Nicholas the Wonderworker is depicted in a classic image, in which every detail is filled with deep symbolism.
The church’s rector, Archpriest Roman Vygovsky, explained that the icon had been there since the church was first consecrated in 2017. Before this sacred image, people had offered their prayers, asking St. Nicholas the Wonderworker for his help and blessing.
“Now, as I look upon this icon, I will pray for our people, that goodness and health may be theirs,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
The president of Belarus gifted the church in the agrotown of Yevdokimovichi a copy of the Icon of the Mother of God of Vladimir, which was created by the artisans of St. Elizabeth Convent in Minsk. The Icon of the Mother of God of Vladimir is one of the most venerated shrines of the Russian Orthodox Church. The icon gifted by the head of state to the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker was made on a panel covered with gesso, using egg tempera, gold leaf, and natural stones.
