MINSK, 3 May (BelTA) - Approximately 170 hectares of forest stands were damaged by gusty winds in Belarus in the latter part of April, Aleksandr Ugrin, head of the forestry department at the Belarusian Forestry Ministry, told the STV TV channel, BelTA learned.
Over the 2024–2025 period, forestry enterprises have carried out clear sanitary logging on a total area of 34,000 hectares. When clearing windfall and storm-damaged timber, priority is given to mechanized harvesting. Specialized logging equipment is used, and the most skilled fellers and lumberjacks are brought in.

“This year, as a result of the gusty winds that occurred in the latter part of April, forest stands were also damaged, covering a total area of about 170 hectares. This year, Mogilev Oblast suffered the most. Once again, the Bykhov forestry enterprise, just as in 2024. There were large-scale windfalls and storm breaks there. This is also explained by the fact that the root systems had already been weakened, and even not-so-strong winds are causing trees to die,” Aleksandr Ugrin said.
He also drew attention to the problem of spruce dieback. During sanitary logging, reforestation is carried out using hardwood species. However, the Forestry Ministry assures that Belarusians will not be left without New Year’s trees.
