Expert: Belarus ranks among world leaders in early-stage cervical cancer detection

MINSK, 3 May (BelTA) - Belarus ranks among world leaders in early-stage cervical cancer detection, Sergei Mavrichev, Deputy Director for Medical Work of the Alexandrov National Scientific and Practical Center of Oncology and Medical Radiology, said on the air of the RTR Belarus TV channel, BelTA has learned.

Sergei Mavrichev emphasized that oncology has long ceased to be a death sentence. In Belarus, 60% of all those diagnosed are people who have been monitored for 5 years or more which means they have lived 5 years or more with such a diagnosis.

“Uterine cancer in our country has a high incidence rate, but in 80% of cases it is detected at the first stage of the disease. This is one of the best rates in the world. This is not the merit of oncologists, because we already receive the patient with a diagnosis. This is the merit of our primary care gynecologists, who at the slightest suspicion perform curettage of the uterine cavity or hysteroscopy with biopsy, thereby establishing the diagnosis, and in 80% of cases it is detected at the first stage,” Sergei Mavrichev said.

He noted that the Department of Gynecology Oncology at the Alexandrov center is a leader in the treatment of such pathologies. In January 2021, the European Society of Gynaecological Oncology (ESGO) officially certified the department as a European Center for Surgery for Advanced Ovarian Cancer.

Sergei Mavrichev is a fourth-generation physician. In his opinion, quality medicine consists of technologies, a team, to some extent the team's passion, equipment, and other components.

“If we compare healthcare in the CIS in terms of the availability of CT and MRI scanners, we are equipped at a very high level. We have a molecular genetic laboratory of carcinogenesis, which is the largest in Europe. Not even all leading Russian centers have our capabilities. As for radiation therapy, our equipment with linear accelerators is quite high. We have 25 linear accelerators, whereas some countries do not have even one. This allows our citizens to receive cancer care at a high level,” Sergei Mavrichev noted. “As for surgery, laparoscopy has become widely used for certain pathologies. In terms of some pathologies, 50-60% of operations are performed using laparoscopy.”

The Alexandrov center also uses the Gamma Knife to treat brain tumors.
