MINSK, 10 April (BelTA) – Sri Lanka’s foreign minister plans to pay a visit to Belarus, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Sri Lanka to Russia and Belarus concurrently Shobini Kaushala Gunasekera told journalists on 10 April, BelTA has learned.
“The minister of foreign affairs of Sri Lanka is going to visit Belarus. I am confident that this will give a good impetus to the further development of bilateral relations,” Shobini Kaushala Gunasekera said.
The ambassador recalled that last year Belarus and Sri Lanka marked the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. She described the relations between the two countries as very close and warm. Among the promising areas of cooperation, Shobini Kaushala Gunasekera named education. “Many of our specialists, especially doctors, received an excellent education at Belarusian universities,” the ambassador said.
Another promising area of cooperation she named is tourism. “As you know, Belavia airline has launched seasonal flights to Sri Lanka. And this is quite a popular destination for Belarusians,” the diplomat noted.
Receiving credentials from ambassadors of foreign states, the head of state described relations with Sri Lanka as an example of what cooperation with Belarus in education can offer other countries. “One in five doctors in Sri Lanka has graduated from a Belarusian higher education institution. Building on this successful experience, we invite you to come and study in our country not only in medical fields but also in engineering, agriculture, the humanities and other disciplines,” the president stressed.
