MINSK, 11 February (BelTA) - Belarus will be represented by its Minister of Foreign Affairs at the inaugural Board of Peace meeting in Washington, Natalya Eismont, Press Secretary of the Belarusian president, told BelTA.

“The Minister of Foreign Affairs, who is fully versed in the matters of Belarus’ participation in the Board of Peace as well as other issues concerning the regional situation and bilateral Belarusian-U.S relations, will represent our country in Washington. The USA has already been informed of this decision,” the press secretary said.

Natalya Eismont noted that Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko, who received the invitation, will not be able to attend the event. “Unfortunately, we received it [the invitation] too late, and the president’s schedule for that period was already set. Yes, we would have gladly visited the USA, but there are matters that can’t be put off,” the press secretary said. “On top of that, we are also factoring in potential logistical hurdles due to the illegal sanctions, primarily from the European Union, given the closure of EU airspace.”

“In this regard, and despite our desire to do so, the president will not be able to take part in the event. That said, I want to emphasize: we fully share the goals of the U.S. president and the Board of Peace to resolve all global conflicts peacefully,” Natalya Eismont said.

As was previously reported, the USA plans to hold the Board of Peace meeting in Washington on 19 February.
