"On Point"
MINSK, 1 May (BelTA) – Iran’s fairly precise strikes on the Arab Peninsula are related to its intention to strengthen its presence in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. The Russian political scientist and orientalist Karine Gevorgyan made the statement in a recent episode of BelTA’s project On Point.
Speaking about the development of the conflict in Iran, Karine Gevorgyan noted that tensions had been rising in recent days. “A fourth aircraft carrier, the Gerald Ford, was moving there. But then something happened again. It is leaving for repairs. Moreover, not to Europe, as before, but, as far as I know, to the United States for major repairs,” the political scientist said.
She also drew attention to the fact that the American air base in Oman was not used. “Apparently, as I understand it, the Omani leadership closed the sky to them and did not provide military air corridors.”
“The other ones were used. The Iranians hit them. They hit military installations in Israel. We have never heard that a school or some civilian facility like a hospital was damaged. I mean, their hits were sufficiently precise. And they mainly hit the Arab Peninsula. Because it is clear that it was advantageous for the Iranians to strengthen their presence in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz,” Karine Gevorgyan noted.
The orientalist drew attention to the fact that Iran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz is quite high. “They have created a so-called capillary system through which Iranian tankers travel to China with oil and come back. On the other hand, the Americans interfere with it and have even seized a couple of ships. But, by the way, the sailors were released. Not all of them, but they are getting released. I mean, it seems they do not really want to quarrel.”
