Lukashenko calls on churches to stay out of politics

GRODNO, 24 August (BelTA) – Representatives of various denominations should have nothing to do with politics, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said at a rally of supporters in Grodno on 22 August, BelTA has learned.

“The position of our churches surprises me. My dear priests, please mind your own business. People go to churches to pray. Orthodox and Catholic churches are not for politics,” the Belarusian leader stressed.

“Do not let be manipulated. You will be ashamed and embarrassed for the stance some of you are taking now. The state will not look at it with indifference,” said Aleksandr Lukashenko.

He added that there are no ethnic issues in Belarus, and such a state of affairs should be preserved. “In no case should ethnic discord be allowed. This will ruin our multi-ethnic country,” the Belarusian leader emphasized.
