Putin: Belarus has faced unprecedented external pressure

MINSK, 2 December (BelTA) - Belarus has faced unprecedented pressure from outside, Russian President Vladimir Putin said during the videoconference meeting of the CSTO Collective Security Council on 2 December, BelTA has learned.

"The situation in the CSTO region was not problem-free and, in general, was turbulent: the armed conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh, the post-election events in Belarus which faced unprecedented pressure from the outside, the domestic political situation in Kyrgyzstan," Vladimir Putin said.

“What causes concern in such situations is external interference in the internal affairs of the states: financial support of opponents of the government, information support, political support. "We need to give the people an opportunity to deal themselves with issues that are of particular interest to them. We have seen the development of the events in the Arab world during the Arab Spring and what that led to, let alone color revolutions in many other countries. They always explain this by ‘good intentions' and, as they say, the road to hell is paved with them. This is what these ‘good intentions' and interference in the internal affairs of other states lead to,” the Russian president said.

“I very much hope that the Belarusian nation is politically mature to build up calmly a political dialogue with all their forces and solve all their internal issues, without pressure and interference from outside. I have no doubt that they will be able to do it, including thanks to the political experience of the president of Belarus,'” Vladimir Putin noted.

The head of state noted that Russia, presiding over the CSTO this year, focused its efforts on further development of the strategic partnership and continuation of open dialogue across the entire range of security issues. As a result, the CSTO countries have prepared a large package of agreements, including the final declaration of the Collective Security Council, a statement on a fair and sustainable world order and several documents, an updated anti-drug strategy.

In September the defense ministers of the CSTO, CIS and Shanghai Cooperation Organization countries held a joint meeting for the first time. "We hope that the meetings in such format will become regular as they give an opportunity to better coordinate positions in the military and political areas with our partners. By the way, we consider the idea of giving the observer and partner status to the countries wishing to maintain regular relations in the CSTO as promising,” the Russian president noted.
