No need to revise Belarus-Russia Union State Treaty

MOSCOW, 27 May (BelTA) – Provisions of the treaty on establishing the Union State of Belarus and Russia do not require revisions. Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei made the statement while talking to reporters after meeting with Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Lavrov in Moscow on 27 May, BelTA has learned.

Vladimir Makei said: “We've discussed the entire spectrum of matters, including those relating to the fulfillment of provisions of the Union State treaty. As you know, the parties have exchanged the relevant proposals, the relevant working group led by the Russian economic development minister and the Belarusian economy minister has been created. This working group will work on the list of proposals and will reconcile the aspects where there are certain differences of opinion. We presume that provisions of the Union State treaty are strategic and do not require a revision. Today one should probably talk about updating the action program on fulfilling the treaty.”

Vladimir Makei said he was confident that the working group would convene soon, would discuss all the matters relating to updating the action program on fulfilling the Union State Treaty, and would submit concrete proposals for consideration of the heads of government or, if necessary, the heads of state.

Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Lavrov expressed a similar view. “Nobody casts doubts on provisions of the treaty but life has moved on in the last two decades. It is necessary to bring our practical steps into compliance with provisions of the treaty to accommodate how they are translated into today's reality,” he noted.

Sergei Lavrov added: “It would be to the advantage of Belarus and Russia to come to terms on the issues that still linger.”
