MINSK, 11 December (BelTA) – Members of the parliamentary cooperation working groups of the Republic of Belarus and the Republic of Cuba have held a videoconference, BelTA has learned.

During the online meeting, the parties discussed stumbling blocks impeding bilateral cooperation and ways to address them that will be further discussed by the Inter-parliamentary Cooperation Commission of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus and the National Assembly of People's Power of the Republic of Cuba.

“The relations between our countries are  special, they were established by the leaders of our states, Aleksandr Lukashenko and Fidel Castro. And, of course, we are making our contribution to these relations at the parliamentary level. It is noteworthy that we have contacts of such a high level with few countries. An inter-parliamentary commission has been put together, and the task of the inter-parliamentary working group is to resolve emerging issues using legislative tools, including at the political level. Today we have discussed them,” noted deputy of the House of Representatives Sergei Klishevich.

The focus is on trade and economic cooperation, the parliamentarian remarked. “We have virtually no issues in the political field; our Cuban counterparts support us at international organizations. Cubans always show solidarity with the Belarusians, they are aligned with our position, we have no problems here. As far as trade and economic relations are concerned, the sanctions imposed on Cuba and Belarus prompt us to look for effective ways to maintain mutually beneficial cooperation – and this is something that our working group can help with. We have discussed all these issues today with our Cuban colleagues. I am sure that this event will strengthen inter-parliamentary interaction and, in general, cooperation between our states,” he said.
