MINSK, 26 December (BelTA) - Tennis player Aryna Sabalenka and trampolinist Viyaleta Bardzilouskaya were named Belarus’ Female Athletes of the Year 2024 at the National Olympic Committee Awards ceremony in Minsk on 25 December, BelTA learned.
Sabalenka started the year 2024 with a victory at the Australian Open and became the first tennis player after Victoria Azarenka to defend the title in Melbourne. In September, Sabalenka won the US Open for the first time in her career. Also last season, Aryna reached the semifinals at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, claimed the titles in Cincinnati and Wuhan. Earlier, the Belarusian was named WTA Player of the Year. She will start the next year as World No. 1.
Viyaleta Bardzilouskaya brought Belarus its first medal of the Summer Olympic Games in Paris, in the individual women’s trampoline. The Games were an international debt for Viyaleta on the senior circuit. On the Day of People’s Unity, 17 September, Viyaleta was awarded the Order of Honor.
“I would like to thank the organizers for the recognition and the fans for the support, which I feel even far from home. I hope to continue bringing emotions to your homes,” Sabalenka said in a video message.
“I am very happy to be here today together with such outstanding people and to receive such a high award. I am grateful absolutely to everyone,” Viyaleta Bardzilouskaya said.
