BREST, 27 April (BelTA) – Vietnam’s Lao Cai Province is interested in the experience gained from setting up and running the Brest Free Economic Zone. That was the message delivered during a meeting between Brest Oblast Governor Piotr Parkhomchik and a delegation from Lao Cai, BelTA has learned.
Brest Oblast and Lao Cai Province have maintained twinning relations since 2017. “Since signing the cooperation agreement, both regions have built a solid foundation for friendly relations, maintained contacts, and exchanged information. We are gradually building ties in trade, culture, and exchanging delegations,” said Duong Quoc Huy, a representative of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam and Secretary of the Lao Cai Provincial Party Committee. He noted that the existing potential for comprehensive cooperation is still hugely untapped.
“We have much in common. Brest is the gateway to Europe; Lao Cai is a border province connecting Asia with China. You have strong positions in processing, logistics, and production organization. In Lao Cai, we are actively developing cross-border trade, logistics, processing industry, digital transformation, and tourism services projects,” emphasized Duong Quoc Huy.
According to him, the Vietnamese province is interested in close cooperation with Brest Oblast in economic and investment matters. “Lao Cai strives to create a cross-border economic cooperation zone. We are counting on consultations, experience exchange, and support from Brest in establishing mechanisms for the effective functioning of a free economic zone. We aim to strengthen cooperation in the industrial sector. We will facilitate collaboration in agriculture along the value-added product chain,” the head of the Vietnamese delegation outlined some of the priorities. Both sides also see mutual interest in joint work in education, healthcare, culture, and tourism.
The Vietnamese delegation has come to participate in the International Business Contact Forum, which will be running in Brest on 28–29 April. Brest Oblast and Lao Cai Province are expected to sign a cooperation program for 2026–2028.
