MINSK, 29 January (BelTA) – Minsk Arena will host the 2025 IIHF Global Girls' Game on 15 February, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ice Hockey Federation.
The Belarusian Ice Hockey Federation has been participating in the IIHF Global Girls' Game project since 2022. Earlier the game was played in Grodno, but the number of female hockey players has recently increased so much that the former venue could not accommodate everyone. Therefore, Minsk Arena has been chosen to be the place for the big celebration of women's hockey. Those wishing to participate in the event should fill out a form on the website of the Belarusian Ice Hockey Federation. Applications are open till 1 February.
Last season, 109 hockey players from 20 cities of Belarus played on the same ice as part of the Global Girls’ Game in Grodno. The participants of the event were both newcomers to the sport and also those who are already defending the colors of the country on the international arena.
“A few years ago we started with 30-50 girls of different ages, and today we have a whole national team in the U15 age category and about 300 female hockey players across the country,” said Svetlana Marchenko, Deputy Chairperson of the Belarusian Ice Hockey Federation. “Global Girls' Game is an important event for the whole Belarusian hockey, which is of great importance for the participants and helps us promote women's hockey. Each of our girls was looking forward to coming to Grodno, and now they will be able to play at the main arena of the country. We want every female hockey player in Belarus to feel the warm atmosphere of this sport celebration.”
The Global Girls’ Game is an initiative of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) to promote the sport among girls. The game between the Team Blue and the Team White players lasts for several days until it is played in each participating country. All pucks scored in the games are totaled, and the victory goes to the team whose total goal score is higher. The first game was played in the 2015/16 season. Taking part in it were 29 countries then. Last year the game featured 40 countries.
