Second strike by Russian hypersonic missile Oreshnik in Ukraine seen as threat to Europeans

MINSK, 13 February (BelTA) – The second strike by Russian hypersonic missile systems Oreshnik [hazelnut] at a target in Ukraine near the border with Poland serves as kind of a warning to Europeans. Head of Russia’s center for studying military and political conflicts Andrei Klintsevich expressed the point of view in a recent episode of BelTA’s YouTube project On Point.
Andrei Klintsevich believes: “Oreshnik is primarily a threat to Europeans. A statement along the lines of ‘We can reach any target in your country’. I think the last time it hit a target near the Polish border was a demonstration considering the massive number of radars and air defense systems deployed over there within the framework of the Eastern Sentry program. Even the Israeli air defense system Arrow 3, which had been deployed in Germany, couldn’t detect these missiles let alone fire at them or try to shoot them down.”

The expert noted that Oreshnik missiles can be seen as an actual implementation of the U.S. orbital kinetic weapon platform concept called Rods From God. “Americans estimated that if huge wolfram rods are deployed in orbit and are simply let loose to hit the ground, then they will get accelerated to hypersonic speeds. When they hit the target, they will release a huge amount of kinetic energy. And Oreshnik missiles have implemented this concept,” he explained.

Andrei Klintsevich remarked that Oreshnik missile systems deployed in Belarus can reach all the way to the UK if necessary. “The two launches have verified that all the systems operate very smoothly,” the expert added.
