Belarusian parliament speaker in favor of transition to mixed-member proportional representation

MINSK, 17 September (BelTA) – Belarus should gradually transition to mixed-member proportional representation. Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus Vladimir Andreichenko made the relevant statement on the air of the TV channel Belarus One on 16 September, BelTA has learned.

The speaker believes there are no problems with the election laws that require immediate changes. Certain issues have cropped up, this is why the Electoral Code needs improvements but there is no need for revolutionary changes.

“As for the mixed election system, I am in favor of our gradually switching to a different system. I would like to see a majority system and a proportional system at the same time, in other words, a mixed election system,” the head of the lower chamber of the Belarusian parliament said. “We will have to make up our minds on the exact percentage. But the parliament should also hear the minority that will be elected to represent our political parties.”
