Belarusian automaker MAZ mulls over assembly plant project in Algeria

MINSK, 17 April (BelTA) – The Belarusian automaker MAZ is mulling over an assembly plant in Algeria, Belarusian Minister of Antimonopoly Regulation and Trade Artur Karpovich told the media after a meeting of the joint Belarusian-Algerian commission for cooperation in trade, economy, science and technology in Minsk on 17 April, BelTA learned.

“Today, the trade between Belarus and Algeria is about $50 million, up 16 times from 2023. It is still not a very big figure for us. The potential of our cooperation is very high. There is interest in restoring the production of Belarusian MTZ tractors and BeAZ front loaders in Algeria. Today we have discussed the issue of organizing assembly production of MAZ vehicles in Algeria. All these projects are of interest to our partners and friends,” Artur Karpovich said.

There are plans to step up mutual supplies between the two countries. “We note that so far this has been one-way trade, unfortunately. We supply our equipment, food products, and milk powder to Algeria. At the same time, we have expressed our readiness to buy both food products and electronic equipment produced in Algeria. We are also ready to host children for recuperation holidays. The first group will arrive this summer. We are also working on opening direct air service. We presented opportunities for cooperation with Belarusian National Biotechnology Corporation. Today we will give our guests another package of documents and a presentation. They are very interested in this project. I think that visits to MTZ, MAZ and AMKODOR will also be useful,” the minister noted.

“I am confident that our cooperation will be successful in different areas of economy, trade, and science. It is a great honor and privilege for me to co-chair the commission on cooperation between our countries. This meeting is the first very important step in the development of cooperation between Belarus and Algeria. It is only the beginning. We have always been interested in agricultural machinery made in Belarus, particularly tractors. Belarus is known for this expertise. Now we are talking about a joint venture to assemble agricultural machinery. Today we will also have an opportunity to visit the Belarusian machine-building enterprises and discuss this topic. I am sure we have a future in this area,” said Youcef Cherfa, Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria.
