Belarus top Portugal in 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup qualifier

MINSK, 25 February (BelTA) – Belarus secured the second victory in the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup Qualification on 24 February, BelTA has learned.

Rostislav Vergun's men defeated Portugal 72-56 at the Minsk Palace of Sports.

Maksim Salash led the team with 19 points.

In the opener Belarus routed Cyprus' Nicosia 97-41, while Portugal outplayed Albania 70-62. Albania defeated Cyprus 71-64. The Group A team standings after two days are as follows: Belarus – 4 points, Portugal – 3, Albania – 3, and Cyprus – 2.

Belarus will next face Albania on 26 November and Cyprus on 30 November on the home ground. Belarus will play the other matches in 2021 – against Portugal on 18 February and Albania on 21 February.

The Group B team standings are: Kosovo – 4 points, Iceland – 3, Slovakia - 3, Luxembourg – 2.

Two best teams from each group will advance to the next stage of the qualifying tournament. The 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup will feature 32 teams. This will be the first World Cup to be hosted by three countries: Indonesia, the Philippines, and Japan.
