Russia’s Altai Territory seeks to expand trade with Belarus

MINSK, 17 September (BelTA) – Russia’s Altai Territory is interested in expanding trade with Belarus, the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Agriculture and Food told BelTA following a meeting between Belarusian Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Shuleiko and a delegation from Altai Territory led by Deputy Chairman of Altai Territory Government Aleksandr Lukyanov.

Belarusian Food and Agriculture Minister Yuri Gorlov was also part of the meeting. The Russian delegation included regional government officials, representatives of the scientific and business communities, including Altai Territory’s Deputy Agriculture Minister Konstantin Lots.

“We are aligning our positions to ensure our dialogue stays on the right track. We are keen to work productively in all areas, from increasing product supplies to expanding the range of joint scientific projects,” Yuri Shuleiko emphasized.

Aleksandr Lukyanov noted Altai Territory’s interest in expanding trade. “We have reached a mutual understanding on key issues. The task is to forge ties at all levels,” he said.

This year, Belarus’ major exports to Altai Territory were meat and meat products, which saw a 12.4-fold increase compared to the same period of last year. Dairy and fish products are also supplied. Since the start of 2025, trade has grown 2.2 times compared to 2024.

The participants noted that their markets do not compete but rather complement each other. Each side has its own strengths, which allows for the development of mutually beneficial exchange, expanding the range for consumers.

The prospects for dairy cattle husbandry received special focus. The talks covered the potential for designing and constructing modern farms and equipping them with Belarusian machinery. Cooperation in plant breeding and variety testing is advancing. This includes work on flax varieties suitable for Altai Territory’s climate and the ongoing testing of grain and oilseed crops. The cooperation in seed farming was highly rated.

Belarus is eager to host specialists from Altai Territory for training at its agricultural universities. The parties already cooperate through higher education institutions and scientific organizations based on the existing agreements and memoranda. The presence of Belarusian veterinary drugs in the region’s market is expanding. Producers have expressed readiness to increase both the volume and range of supplied products.

Interest in supplies of Belarusian premixes, compound feed, gluten, and amino acids was also confirmed.

The parties agreed to continue the dialogue, deepen practical interaction, and implement specific joint projects.
