Ambassador outlines areas for Belarus-Slovakia cooperation amid EU restrictions

MINSK, 3 March (BelTA) – The newly appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to Slovakia Igor Fisenko talked about possible areas for cooperation between the two countries, BelTA has learned.

“Unfortunately, the restrictions imposed by the European Union leave their mark on our cooperation. Nevertheless, there are still areas where we can work. I think cooperation in the food industry and humanitarian ties in healthcare, education are promising,” the ambassador said.

Igor Fisenko noted that his appointment to the position of Belarusian Ambassador to Slovakia demonstrates that Minsk is ready to reciprocate the hand of friendship extended by European countries. “Just a year ago Slovak Ambassador Jozef Migaš came to work in Belarus (which is his second term) and he works actively. He is very well-known in our country for his principled stance. Naturally, we are reciprocating and restoring our [diplomatic] presence in Bratislava. Of course, after a certain hiatus, we will need to sort things out, delve into the topics of economics and political contacts,” the diplomat emphasized.

When making appointments on 3 March, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said that Slovakia is a friendly country for Belarus, and it should be treated accordingly. He also noted that he is acquainted with Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico, who, by virtue of his position, plays a key role in governing the country. They have developed good relations. The politicians have met and discussed many issues. “[He is] a reasonable person, very concerned about his country. He hasn’t forgotten where he came from,” the Belarusian leader said.
