Minsk honors memory of Gazaros Avakyan

MINSK, 7 May (BelTA) - A rally to commemorate Hero of the Soviet Union Gazaros Avakyan took place in Minsk on 7 May, BelTA has learned.

Participants laid flowers at the memorial plaque dedicated to the hero at 38 Avakyan Street. Armenia’s Chargé d’Affaires in Belarus Artur Sargsyan noted that every person present had a relative who took part in the Great Patriotic War. “For example, I lost my grandfather in that war. Our ancestors fought together and stood firm. This street was named after Gazaros Avakyan back in 1976, and later a memorial plaque was installed. It is very heartening that Minsk honors the memory of our heroes. This is very important, for instance, Ivan Bagramyan took part in Operation Bagration, and his grandchildren visit Minsk every year,” he said.

CIS First Deputy Secretary General Igor Petrishenko said that Gazaros Avakyan is one of 12 natives of Armenia to receive the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, which was earned during Operation Bagration.

“We remember and honor the heroism of all people from the CIS states, and today specifically of Armenia. They stood shoulder to shoulder defending every inch of their native land. In 1941 1942, six divisions were formed from Armenian people, including the famous Taman Division, which took part in raising the Victory Banner over the Reichstag,” Igor Petrishenko recalled. He also noted the sincerity and warmth shown to all veterans across the CIS countries.

Chairman of the Hayastan Union Georgy Yegiazaryan stressed that the Great Patriotic War is one of the most difficult chapters in Belarus’ history. “All 15 republics of the USSR rose to fight the enemy, and that was why we won. More than 100 Armenians were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, some of them for the liberation of Belarus,” he added.

Head of the Oktyabrsky District administration Eduard Tomilchik noted that Gazaros Avakyan went through all stages of the Great Patriotic War. “At the time, as a young officer, he defended the Soviet Union. When he was surrounded, he did not look for easy ways and did not hide, he fought against the invaders,” Eduard Tomilchik added.

Avakyan performed his main feat on 6 July 1944 during Operation Bagration. While eliminating an encircled enemy group, his platoon held one of the key heights in Cherven District. The Germans launched six attacks. In that battle, the commander killed 22 enemy soldiers. For this feat, he was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.

On 8 May, Minsk will hold rallies to commemorate Hero of the Soviet Union Ion Soltys and soldiers from Kazakhstan.
