MINSK, 7 May (BelTA) – Minsk hosted a commemorative rally in honor of Hero of the Soviet Union Domullo Azizov on 7 May, BelTA has learned.
The event began with the laying of flowers at the memorial plaque dedicated to the hero at 2 Azizov Street in Minsk. Participants also honored his memory by visiting Secondary School No. 35, which bears his name.
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Tajikistan to Belarus Bakhtovar Safarzoda noted that today special importance is attached to the events of the Great Patriotic War.
“From the very first days of the Great Patriotic War, thousands of young men and women from Tajikistan volunteered for the front. Domullo Azizov was among them. But he was not taken at first because he was a teacher. Only at almost 29 years old did he manage to enlist. He was refused three times. Sadly, in October 1943 he died a heroic death. Today we, his descendants, are grateful to all Soviet people, thanks to whose victory we live in a peaceful country, develop, and raise future generations,” he said.
Balsrusian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Pavel Utyupin stressed that Belarusians have lived peacefully and freely for more than 80 years, raising children and looking to the future with confidence.
“But we will always remember that we owe our very existence to the Soviet people and their feat. They liberated the world from the brown plague. Shoulder to shoulder, our brothers of all nationalities from the Soviet republics worked selflessly in the rear, giving everything necessary for the front. Today, on the grounds of Secondary School No. 35, we recall the feat of a son of the Tajik people. Domullo Azizov was a simple rural teacher who insisted on taking up arms and going to the front to defend our common Motherland. In October 1943 he performed a heroic act during the Dnieper crossing, for which he was later awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union. He died a heroic death and forever remained here, on Belarusian soil. Thank you to the teachers for preserving the memory of this man for the younger generation,” he said.
CIS First Deputy Secretary General Igor Petrishenko emphasized that memory must be nourished in order to be preserved forever.
“These sincere events are precisely what nourish the memory of those living today about the generation that courageously defended Victory. They are a link that strengthens the friendship between Tajikistan and Belarus. Much was done for our common Victory. The feat of Domullo Azizov and many Tajiks who gave their lives fighting among partisans and in the underground is proof of this. Much was also done in Tajikistan itself to bring Victory closer: evacuation hospitals that helped Red Army soldiers recover, research institutes, and of course the reception of children who found families and were surrounded with care and love,” he said.
A commemorative rally in honor of Hero of the Soviet Union Gazoros Avakyan is also scheduled to take place on 7 May.
