‘A sunny day of joy and dancing’: WWII veteran looks back on May 1945

MINSK, 8 May (BelTA) – Ahead of Victory Day, WWII veteran Yadviga Yerobkina was congratulated on the upcoming holiday, BelTA has learned.

Yadviga Yerobkina was born on 6 October 1925. From 1943 to January 1945, she worked as a clerk at secondary school No. 18 in Krasnodar Territory. From February to May 1945, she served as a nurse on a military hospital train. She said that Victory Day is the most significant holiday for her – one she welcomes with sincerity and love, but also with sorrow and tears.
“My older sister died in Stalingrad. She carried 18 wounded soldiers off the battlefield. I also served as a nurse, tending to the wounded. The only time I felt fear was during the bombings. During air raids, the staff and those with light injuries would run from the train for cover. But my carriage was full of the severely wounded, so we stayed with them. There was no time to be afraid, you had to worry about the others,” Yadviga Yerobkina noted.

The veteran also recalled how she heard the news of the Victory. “I remember that day as if it were yesterday. I was in Czechoslovakia. It was a bright, sunny day. Everyone was celebrating and dancing. That is how I welcomed the Victory. I remember it vividly, and I will never forget it,” she said.
The war taught her to love people and cherish her Motherland. “I was born in Minsk, my ancestors lived here, and I will stay here. We must protect our country and love it, as well as the people around us. No one is without flaws, but we must learn to forgive, to avoid gossip, and never to insult anyone,” Yadviga Yerobkina emphasized.

Today, she was congratulated on the upcoming holiday as part of the campaign titled as Council of the Republic with Gratitude to Veterans, which runs from 15 April 15 to 15 May. Chairwoman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Natalya Kochanova personally presented the gifts to Yadviga Yerobkina.
