MOSCOW, 8 May (BelTA) – Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko called the Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 great legacy. He made the statement during a meeting with President of Russia Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin, BelTA has learned.
“It is kind of an achievement of ours. Back in the day our ancestors saved not only Europe but the whole world from the brown plague. It is clear what would have happened to us if our predecessors had lost this war. This is our great legacy. We proceed from that. It is the legacy of Russians, Belarusians, and all the republics of the Soviet Union. Everyone fought (even if the war did not reach everyone) and died by the tens, hundreds, and thousands,” Aleksandr Lukashenko noted.
He drew attention to the position of some, with whom Belarusians previously lived in one state and who for some reason refuse to recognize this holiday. “I still cannot get rid of the thought: some of our friends and neighbors, with whom we lived in one state, refuse to recognize these holidays for some reason. Especially our neighbors, the Belarusian ones. The question always arises: why do they do it?”
“It is simply unsightly and disgusting, frankly speaking, when you watch some of our ‘comrades’ who decided not just to forget but to throw this Victory under their feet altogether,” the Belarusian leader remarked. “Well, as for well-known figures whose close ancestors (fathers, grandfathers) fought in this war, their behavior is completely incomprehensible.”
“But you and I cannot give away this Victory to anyone. This is our legacy, our achievement. Belarusians lost every third citizen in this war. What Belarus president can risk throwing this Great Victory under the feet like a rag?! None! Therefore, I am grateful to you for constantly inviting me — and by extension the Belarusian people — to participate in this great event [the Victory Day parade]. Once our ancestors marched across Red Square very impressively in difficult times and went to the frontline after the first parade. I am proud of it. I know that you also appreciate and take pride in this. Therefore, the time will come when people will ask for permission to come here and to be in this square. Well, today time has shown who is who,” Aleksandr Lukashenko concluded.
