‘Music saved my life’: American living in Belarus on the power of art

MINSK, 8 May (BelTA) – Music has a magical way of healing the soul, leaving you feeling as if you’ve just returned from a 10-day vacation in Hawaii, former aviation engineer, musician, and Los Angeles native Mark Aron Hudnall said in BelTA’s Honest Story project.
The former aircraft engineer now firmly settled in Belarus shared how he decided to become a musician and how deeply this art form affects him. “Music sort of saved my life. When I was 17, I felt like I was losing my soul. Los Angeles was a very racy place to grow up as a kid in the 1960s and 1970s. Lots of drugs and things of that nature. And so I spiritually needed an outlet and I automatically turned to the piano. I began songwriting and I found that there was it was like magic to heal my soul. As my piano playing skills got better, I just kept diving deeper and deeper into the piano. I started playing piano up to 8 hours a day. This went on for probably two and a half years where I was just consistently playing 8 hours a day, 4 hours in the morning, 4 hours in the evening. If you’re wondering: ‘How did you go to school?’ I had a throat infection when I was at this age, so I was out of school for six months. It was during this time that I actually started playing piano. I became a songwriter. I was could write two songs at a time. Two different melodies, different key signatures, completely different song ideas. Songs always seemed to come in pairs, and I just always enjoyed the experience. I would basically go into a trance and I would just work out variations on melodies and just keep on working them. A few hours later I would stop. You have this feeling of temporal expansion that I would feel like I just came back from Hawaii for ten-day vacation. It was really helping me connect with who I am as a person to learn my own magic and to express my voice, because I would sing also,” Mark Aaron Hudnall shared his story.

He added that his career in music was quite successful. “By the time I was 20, I had written approximately 50 songs already. My memory was so good at that time, I could sit down and play 50 covers and 50 originals. In 1979-1980, I was a singing lead singer in two bands as well. Both of them I thought were a lot of fun and extremely popular in L.A. We did play in nightclubs and colleges, but they never played my original music. But I really valued it. I just didn’t have any money to do anything with it. But once I got into the military and I started having career, then I started investing my money back in music again. And then my job would take center stage again. There was a period in my life where I didn’t play piano or sing for 20 years and then kind of forced into my back injuries from both military and commercial industrial work for the airline, but also primarily starting in the military. Then I could fall back on my for music,” he noted.
