Over 100 women named Yekaterina gather in Mogilev to sing wartime classic song Katyusha

MOGILEV, 7 May (BelTA) - More than 100 residents of Mogilev Oblast named Yekaterina gathered at Unity Square on 7 May to perform the famous wartime song Katyusha as a choir, BelTA has learned.

The event was a vivid example of the living connection between generations and a tribute to the heroes of the Great Patriotic War. The initiative to bring together all the Yekaterinas of the region proved extremely popular. Women of all ages came to the square from schoolgirls to elderly ladies. Some participants arrived on retro motorcycles, creating a special atmosphere. Many came with friends, colleagues, daughters and granddaughters, turning the event into a true family celebration.
Employees named Yekaterina from Mogilev’s sanatorium kindergarten No. 55 came as a team. According to them, the decision to take part was spontaneous and heartfelt.

“We came on our own initiative. We all work together, so today we wanted to be here. We brought our granddaughters too, so that from an early age they could understand the meaning and significance of these holidays. My granddaughter already knows that she had a great‑grandfather who went through the war. We have known the song Katyusha since childhood, and now we try to teach it to the new generation,” one of the participants shared.

Schoolchildren also actively supported the event. Yekaterina Lazarenko, a 9th‑grade student from School No. 6, came to the square in a beautiful military uniform with her friends. She admitted that she decided to join the choir without hesitation.
“When I heard about the event, I wanted to become part of it. I have known the song since childhood, so there was no doubt. Ten Katyushas from our school came to sing this famous song,” she said.
Yekaterina Shishko, an employee of Mogilev Kindergarten No. 58, and her colleague stressed that taking part in such events is a matter of principle and patriotism. “We saw the information online and immediately wanted to come. We are patriots of our country and are always ready to support national initiatives. There was no discussion, we knew right away that we would be singing today. We always have the appropriate accessories because we are activists and regularly take part in such events,” Yekaterina Shishko said.

For the participants, 9 May remains the main and brightest holiday, symbolizing freedom and a peaceful sky. “Victory Day is the day our country became free and independent. It is the memory of fallen soldiers who fought so that we could live the way we do today,” she added.
The mass performance of Katyusha song at Unity Square drew warm emotions from everyone. Many Mogilev residents stopped to listen and then join in singing the familiar lines of the legendary song.
