BREST, 7 May (BelTA) - Brest took over the baton of the international patriotic event Flame of Memory on 7 May, BelTA has learned.
The purpose of the event is to carry a particle of the Eternal Flame from the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in the Alexander Garden of the Kremlin, one of the main symbols of remembrance of fallen heroes, to places of memory. The ceremony for handing over the lampada took place at Brest Hero Fortress in front of the Defense Museum of Brest Fortress.
“Once upon a time, the Eternal Flame of Brest Fortress was lit from the flame on the Field of Mars in Leningrad, and now the tradition continues. The Eternal Flame at Brest Fortress burns forever: in any weather and any season. It is a symbol of our eternal memory of our ancestors who gave their lives for Victory. Thanks to it, we are alive today,” said Aleksandr Korkotadze, director of the Brest Hero Fortress museum.
The lampada was handed over by Aleksandr Astashenok, a representative of the"People's Front, an artist. “The symbolism of the action is that the sacred flame is unquenchable. Every year we remember the events of those years so that new generations remember the price our ancestors paid,” Aleksandr Astashenok said.
The Flame of Memory event began ahead of Victory Day at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and is held for the tenth time. Representatives of the People's Front and other participants of the event carried the particles of the Eternal Flame in special lamps. This year, they will be delivered to 11 countries and 60 regions of Russia.
A ceremony to reinter the remains of seven defenders of the legendary citadel on the Bug River was held at Brest Fortress on 7 May. Beneath the slabs of the necropolis rest 1,055 heroes - defenders of the citadel and members of their families.
