MINSK, 3 March (BelTA) – The nationwide campaign “We are citizens of Belarus!” dedicated to Constitution Day will begin in Minsk on 9 March, BelTA learned from Svetlana Pavlenina, Secretary of the Central Committee of the Belarusian Republican Youth Union (BRSM).
Svetlana Pavlenina said: “14-year-old boys and girls representing all the oblasts and the city of Minsk will be the main characters of the festive event. A total of 25 people. Passports of citizens of the Republic of Belarus will be handed over to the young people by Chairman of the Constitutional Court Sergei Sivets and First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Belarusian Republican Youth Union Vladimir Pavlovsky. Symbolic gifts will also be presented to the boys and girls as per tradition. Participants of the event will receive a branded box with a copy of the Constitution and a state flag of the Republic of Belarus as well as a spils map – a set of magnetic parts in the shape of territorial units of our country.”
The Belarusian Republican Youth Union came up with this patriotic initiative in 2004. “Since then it has become hugely popular with young Belarusians and is rightfully considered one of the important traditions of our country. The handing over of passports to the teenagers in a solemn setting underlines their transition to the adult life and allows them to better understand that they are now full-fledged citizens of Belarus, who answer to the country and its laws. The state holiday Belarus Constitution Day is marked every year on 15 March. The Basic Law defines the foundations of state power and public life, guarantees the fundamental rights and freedoms of citizens, defines the foundations of a democratic social lawful state, and represents an important factor for shaping the civic identity and the national identity of Belarusians,” the press service of the BRSM Central Committee added.
Events of the patriotic campaign will take place in all regions of Belarus on 9-15 March.
