Time Chose Us: How BelAZ developed the world’s largest haul truck

MINSK, 4 January (BelTA) - The film "Time Chose Us" on the Belarus 1 TV channel recounted the production of the world’s largest haul truck at BelAZ in 2013, BelTA has learned.

The famous BelAZ plant, which was almost ruined in the early 1990s, presented its biggest vehicle in 2013. It was a haul truck that could carry 450 tonnes of cargo. No one in the world has managed to make such a giant yet.

The haul truck, which the foreign press nicknamed a “monster truck”, was the only such vehicle in 2013. This model attracted a lot of attention as it was displayed on the open area of the plant on the Machine Builder's Day.

Aleksandr Naskovets, design engineer (2013), Deputy Chief Designer of BelAZ - Managing Company of BelAZ Holding Company, noted that Piotr Parkhomchik, BelAZ Director General at that time, said at one of the exhibitions in Las Vegas that Belarus was capable of making a haul truck with a payload capacity of 450 tonnes. “A task was set to develop a haul truck which would confirm our competences, show that our company was innovative. It took exactly two years from the first sketch to a ready vehicle rolling off the production line. For such a huge project it is just an insignificant amount of time,” Aleksandr Naskovets said.

The truck is eight meters tall. To get to the cabin, you have to climb 25 steps. It is like climbing up a four-story building. The truck is 810 tonnes heavy, and it has 4,600 horsepower. The truck has such power that the claimed 450 tonnes of lifting capacity is not even the limit.

Such a huge payload was not just a design wish, but a demand of the world market. Mining companies were struggling to reduce production costs. Large machines is a great help here. Therefore, the Belarusian giants were predicted a bright future in mining.
