MINSK, 8 September (BelTA) – The European Union wants to appear as some kind of besieged fortress in the eyes of its citizens, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Maksim Ryzhenkov said on the air of the Belarus 1 TV channel, BelTA reports.

In response to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s visit to EU nations bordering Russia and Belarus, Maksim Ryzhenkov dismissed the trip as a “political show” designed to inflame tensions. He argued that the EU is deliberately portraying itself as a “besieged fortress” to its citizens, a narrative intended to frighten the population and justify its internal socio-economic failures.

“They have launched a massive campaign to militarize their own countries and the entire region. This diverts colossal funds away from critical social and infrastructure projects. Their citizens are right to demand an explanation: Why is their standard of living falling? Why should they struggle while billions are funneled into military spending? The answer lies in Brussels, where politicians, in close contact with the military-industrial lobby, are using this to solve their own financial and political problems,” the diplomat emphasized.

Maksim Ryzhenkov noted that European politicians are hostages of the situation they have dragged themselves, their countries, and their peoples into. At one time, the European Union began to support Ukraine too ardently, including financially, and promote anti-Russian rhetoric, but today, when the West’s goals have not been achieved, the question arises: what were all the resources spent on?

“To support Ukraine? Where are the dividends? To militarize their region to the detriment of socio-economic development? Why was it necessary to do this?” the minister asked.
