German policy seen as detrimental to Belarus-Germany post-war reconciliation

MINSK, 11 April (BelTA) – Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Germany to Belarus Manfred Huterer was summoned to the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 11 April, BelTA has learned.

German authorities changed the format of the commemorative event held in the memorial complex Buchenwald on 10 April 2022. Representatives of the German government took part in the commemorative events. In view of the change of the format the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs told the German ambassador it is inadmissible to trample the memory of victims of the Belarusian people during World War Two and memory of dozens of thousands of Belarusian prisoners of concentration camps, including the concentration camps Buchenwald and Mittelbau-Dora.

According to the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with such actions the German side damages many years of joint efforts meant to reconcile the two nations. Taking into account the suffering Belarusians endured at the hands of Nazi invaders and Belarus' contribution to the Nazi downfall, such actions of the German side cannot be justified by anything, least of all by any fleeting considerations or disingenuous motives.

The Belarusian government expects the German side to take steps to rectify the unacceptable situation and prevent similar events from happening again in the future.
