Elections 2016. Bastunets included in council to monitor election campaigning in Belarusian media

MINSK, 3 August (BelTA) – Head of the Belarusian Association of Journalists (BAJ) Andrei Bastunets has been included in the supervisory council that will monitor the compliance with the rules regulating the use of mass media for pre-election campaigning. Such a decision was made at the session of the Central Election Commission on 3 August, BelTA has learned.

Nominating Andrei Bastunets, Chairperson of the Belarusian Central Election Commission (CEC) Lidia Yermoshina mentioned his big experience in journalism, including from the legal point of view. The CEC head expressed hope that the position of the BAJ head will help work out efficient solutions taking into account the interests of all sides in case any controversies regarding the use of mass media in pre-election campaigning emerge.

Pre-election campaigning has not begun in Belarus yet. But, as experience shows, certain complaints against mass media, potential candidates who begin campaigning for themselves prematurely can emerge before the beginning of pre-election campaigning. There have not been any complaints this year, Lidia Yermoshina said.
