Belarus, Myanmar discuss prospects for bilateral parliamentary cooperation

MINSK, 10 April (BelTA) – The priority task of parliamentarians is to implement the agreements reached at the highest level, Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus Igor Sergeyenko said at a meeting with Speaker of Myanmar’s Pyithu Hluttaw Khin Yi, BelTA learned from the press service of the House of Representatives.

Igor Sergeyenko congratulated his counterpart on the successful conduct of general elections in Myanmar, the formation of the legislative branch of government, and Khin Yi’s election as speaker of Myanmar’s Pyithu Hluttaw.

“Belarus prioritizes the development of the full spectrum of relations with Myanmar, which it regards as a reliable and friendly partner in Southeast Asia,” Igor Sergeyenko stressed.

During the meeting, the parties noted with satisfaction the intensification of bilateral cooperation at all levels and stated that more had been achieved over the past year than during the entire period since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1999.
In March 2025, an official Myanmar delegation led by Min Aung Hlaing visited the Belarusian capital. In November 2025, the first official visit of the Belarusian president to Myanmar took place. In December 2025, a Belarusian delegation participated in international observation of parliamentary elections in Myanmar.

Igor Sergeyenko emphasized that the priority task of parliamentarians is to actively facilitate the implementation of the agreements reached during the official visit of the Belarusian president to Myanmar.

During the conversation, special emphasis was placed on the projects agreed upon by the leaders of the two countries and relevant organizations, including trade exchange, expanding the practice of Myanmar students studying at Belarusian universities, holding joint events in culture and the arts, increasing tourist flows, and others.

Igor Sergeyenko and Khin Yi also discussed prospects for developing bilateral parliamentary cooperation, the need to step up contacts through parliamentary friendship groups, and the feasibility of signing an agreement on interparliamentary cooperation. The topic of interaction within international parliamentary organizations was also touched upon.

In addition, Igor Sergeyenko invited the speaker of Myanmar’s Pyithu Hluttaw to visit Belarus.

The final item on the agenda of the visit of Chairman of the House of Representatives Igor Sergeyenko to Myanmar was his meeting with the country’s defense minister.
