Minsk hosts Vladimir Ryzhenkov Memorial Basketball Tournament

MINSK, 5 December (BelTA) – The Vladimir Ryzhenkov Memorial Basketball Tournament has kicked off in Minsk, BelTA has learned.

Over the course of three days, U16 teams from Belarus, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Russia will compete on the court of the capital’s sports complex at the National State Olympic Reserve School. The Belarusian boys’ team is coached by Andrei Klemez, while the Belarusian girls’ national team will play under the guidance of Viktoria Datsun. The winners and medalists will be determined on Sunday, 7 December. Matches begin at 10:00 am, and entry is free. Last year, the Belarusian team won the boys’ competition, and the girls’ title was claimed by players from a basketball school in Mytishchi, Moscow Oblast with the Belarusian girls taking silver.

The tournament in memory of Vladimir Ryzhenkov, the first Sports and Tourism Minister and the first President of the National Olympic Committee of Belarus, was established in 1996. For his merits, Vladimir Ryzhenkov was awarded the titles “Honored Worker of Physical Education and Sports” and “Honored Coach of the BSSR”, and was also presented with the Certificate of Honor from the Supreme Council of the BSSR, as well as an award and a commemorative medal from the International Olympic Committee.
