State Secretariat of Belarus’ Security Council names main component of officer training

MINSK, 3 March (BelTA) – Appointed by the head of state to the position of the first deputy state secretary of the Security Council, Aleksandr Neverovsky talked to reporters about intermediate results of the snap inspection of the combat readiness of Belarus’ Armed Forces and about the need to raise physical training standards of military personnel, BelTA has learned.

When asked about the snap inspection of the Belarusian army, Aleksandr Neverovsky mentioned that such events allow identifying drawbacks in military personnel training in order to fix them later on. “As the president said, we have no ideal military personnel. And then again we have no ideal people. Meanwhile, such inspections allow detecting shortcomings in the organization of military training and physical training,” he said.
Speaking about physical training, the first deputy state secretary of the Security Council noted that physical training does not always get proper attention in secondary schools and higher education institutions. “In the past we used to pass state-ordered physical training tests. Running for 3-5km was a standard practice. Respectively running for that distance was a natural process in the army, too,” he stressed.
In turn, Andrei Gorbatenko, who has been appointed Deputy State Secretary of the Security Council by the head of state, pointed out that physical training is the foundation for a future officer. “I’ve adjusted the training of cadets in the Military Academy. The list of standards they have to meet has been expanded. I think the cadets will become more fit. We know problems and we are working on it,” he assured.

The deputy state secretary of the Security Council stressed that on the whole, officers have to meet special requirements. “If necessary, these people need to be able to skillfully manage their subordinates and take steps to minimize combat losses. This is why it is necessary to pay attention to physical fitness, weapon mastery, and other matters,” Andrei Gorbatenko said.

BelTA reported earlier that while appointing personnel to executive positions in the State Secretariat of the Security Council on 3 March, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko mentioned it is necessary to step up the training of officer personnel and ensure strict oversight over the matter not only in units of the Armed Forces but also in the Military Academy. He once again underlined the important role of the officer corps in combat operations: “The key is the officer, who commands a platoon, a company, and so on. If he is prepared, then he will preserve the soldiers, his subordinates, he will preserve the guys on the battlefield. Some may not live up to the standards and doubt that a war will happen… During a war, during a firefight all of it will be revealed. If they did not understand something in their civilian lives, then the officer should prompt them how to operate in the time of war.”

“I cannot say that things are ideal in this regard. And these are your shortcomings. This is why in the new position you should rigorously oversee the training of our military personnel not only in units of the Armed Forces but also in the [Military] Academy,” the president identified the range of tasks.
