Expert: Only Russia and Belarus offered measured take on Venezuela

MINSK, 16 January (BelTA) - The most balanced, considered, and at the same time the most resolute assessments of the situation in Venezuela have been given by two countries - Russia and Belarus, Elena Ponomareva, Doctor of Political Science, Professor at MGIMO, said in the latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
The expert noted that Western media often inflames tensions, using any situation to benefit those in power. In this context, one must approach any statements in the mass media with caution. “First, everything needs to be analyzed very clearly, and we must note not just dry diplomatic reports that show us something through newspapers. Here, serious analytical intelligence structures must get involved, and the top leadership must have the fullest possible picture. Secondly, we must unequivocally understand for ourselves that we cannot trust them. We cannot trust the Westerners. They will always have a trick up their sleeve, and what’s more, that trick might be so blatant it’s like a clenched fist, which is hard to miss. And they truly have their own interests, which are fixed in strategic documents: to strengthen their own alliances, of course, and develop their own economy, understanding that everything, globalization, is over. And although we have often spoken lately about a multipolar world, the cases of Venezuela and Iran show that we are still far from multipolarity, because few are ready to support either Maduro or the Iranian regime,” said the political scientist.

She emphasized that few countries have spoken out not just thoughtfully, but resolutely. “In particular, perhaps one can say that the most balanced, considered, and simultaneously the most resolute assessments of the situation in Venezuela have been given by two countries - the Russian Federation and Belarus. This was done both on the UN platform and in statements, for example, by the head of state, if you look at what Aleksandr Lukashenko said. Neither BRICS nor Latin American unions have spoken out. But again, let’s remember Kissinger, who said there is no Latin America, only several dozen states, and when you are divided, you can easily be broken and forced to submit. So, this is the only way to react to what is happening,” the expert said. “To what has been said, one must naturally add military-technical power, which consists not only in the nuclear triad but also in the will and spirit of the security structures, the army, and the understanding that we have reached the line where the question is truly about our survival in our space.”
