MINSK, 1 April (BelTA) – Israel has U.S. President Donald Trump by the throat in the conflict with Iran, editor-in-chief of PolitRussia, political scientist Ruslan Ostashko said in a recent episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
Commenting on one of the latest statements by U.S. President Donald Trump that he is ready to stop the war with Iran, Ruslan Ostashko noted: “Trump says what the political situation in the United States itself forces him to say. He has come under enormous, colossal criticism. He himself did not expect the operation to take so long. He would certainly like to bail out, but who would let him? There is a clear sense that Israel has him by the throat and will not let him or allow him to bail out of this war.”

“If Trump had the chance today to end the conflict and declare himself the winner – even with the Strait of Hormuz closed – then formally, as he has repeatedly stated, they have achieved their goal. They supposedly changed the regime in Iran. They swapped one Khamenei for another Khamenei, and the regime has been changed. So formally, he could quite comfortably declare victory and walk away. But right now, they won’t let him,” the political scientist stated.

Ruslan Ostashko stressed that the U.S. leader currently has a new strategy: “Caroline Leavitt [the White House press secretary] stated this openly: ‘Pay up,’ she said to the monarchs of the Persian Gulf, ‘and we will fight for you.’ So, for Trump, this is now a business project – one he will profit from.”

“A destroyer with 3,000 marines has already arrived in the Persian Gulf. A ground operation, unfortunately, is currently very real. And the circumstances simply will not allow Trump to simply turn around and walk away,” the analyst added.

Ruslan Ostashko also pointed out that Donald Trump is very constrained by U.S. legislation. “The president only has 60 days to conduct special operations without congressional approval. After that, he needs the approval of Congress and, in effect, an official declaration of war against one side or another, although they call them military operations. Let’s see what Trump will do. In a month, he may well say that he would be happy to continue fighting, to defeat everyone, but the Democrats in Congress are preventing him from doing so, and he will declare them enemies of the United States. That is the traditional Trump,” he said. “Today, Trump very much wants to bail out, but he does not have the opportunity to do so.”
