Zhang Wenchuan: Belarus-China wartime friendship laid foundation for lasting brotherhood

MINSK, 15 August (BelTA) - The friendship between the peoples of Belarus and China, forged during the hardships of war, has become an inexhaustible source of brotherhood, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People's Republic of China to the Republic of Belarus Zhang Wenchuan said at the opening ceremony of a photo exhibition marking the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. The event took place at the Belarusian State Museum of the History of the Great Patriotic War, BelTA has learned.

“Looking back at the events of 80 years ago, we see how the Chinese people, with their blood and lives, wrote a heroic chapter in history that shook the world,” the diplomat said. “As the main battlefield of the Eastern Front in World War II, China was the first to resist fascism in 1931 and fought the longest, until 1945.”

He went on saying: “Under the banner of the anti-Japanese national united front, initiated by the Communist Party of China, the sons and daughters of China heroically joined the battle, fought shoulder to shoulder, and through their collective efforts, at the cost of over 35 million lives, defeated Japanese militarism, playing a decisive role in the complete destruction of the Japanese aggressors.”

“We see how closely intertwined the fates of the Chinese and Belarusian peoples were, supporting each other in the struggle,” the ambassador noted. “During the war, Chinese patriots in Vitebsk formed an underground organization to participate in the anti-fascist resistance. General Tang Duo, the Chinese Falcon, fought in the skies for the liberation of Minsk and was awarded the Order of Lenin.”

He also highlighted that Mao Anying, the eldest son of Chinese leader Mao Zedong, fought side by side with the Belarusian people against the fascist invaders.

Zhang Wenchuan emphasized the significance of Belarusian soldiers who, as part of the Red Army, participated in aerial battles against Japanese aggressors and in the liberation of northeast China.

“The names of Soviet Union Heroes, such as Aleksei Blagoveshchensky and Yevgeny Nikolayenko, are forever etched in the memory of the Chinese people. The friendship sealed by the blood and lives of our peoples has become an enduring source of Chinese-Belarusian brotherhood,” the head of the diplomatic mission said.
