MINSK, 18 October (BelTA) - A delegation of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus led by Speaker of the House of Representatives Igor Sergeyenko will pay an official visit to the Lao People's Democratic Republic on 18-20 October to take part in the 45th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (AIPA), BelTA learned from the press service of the House of Representatives.
The official visit will feature meetings with Laos’ authorities. The parties will discuss issues of bilateral relations, including cooperation in trade, finance, industry, agriculture, healthcare, education, culture and tourism.
The Belarusian delegation will include businessmen with a view to intensifying trade and economic interaction. Igor Sergeyenko is set to make a speech at the plenary session of the AIPA General Assembly and also take part in the dialogue with the AIPA member countries, hold a number of bilateral meetings with the heads of parliamentary delegations. The delegation includes Chairman of the Standing Committee on International Affairs of the House of Representatives Sergei Rachkov.
The Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (AIPA) was established in 1977. Currently, ASEAN members are ten states - Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam. The population of ASEAN countries is about 672.4 million people, with the total GDP at $3.6 trillion (2022).
The main objectives of the AIPA are to promote the principles of human rights, democracy, peace, security and prosperity of ASEAN, and to develop a common identity and sense of belonging among the peoples of ASEAN to achieve a common destiny, goals and values.
The AIPA highest body is the General Assembly, which convenes once a year to set policy directions for the development of the organization. Its venue alternates among member parliaments in alphabetical order. The president of the national parliament of the member state where the General Assembly is to be held is the president of the AIPA and the president of the General Assembly.
The 45th AIPA General Assembly, with the theme “The Role of Parliaments in Enhancing Connectivity and Inclusive Growth of ASEAN, being held in the Lao capital Vientiane in October 2024, is chaired by Speaker of the Lao National Assembly Saysomphone Phomvihane.
The AIPA has 23 observers. The parliament of Belarus received the observer status in September 2011 in Phnom Penh (Kingdom of Cambodia) at the 32nd AIPA General Assembly. This gave Belarus an access to a platform for a permanent dialogue with the member countries of the organization on economic, political, social and humanitarian issues.
Belarusian MPs regularly participate in events organized by the AIPA, including the annual AIPA General Assembly.
