MINSK, 26 March (BelTA) – Prolonged crises in the region and in the Middle East risk sparking an increase in the number of refugees, Belarus’ representative said at the 95th session of the Standing Committee of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Geneva, BelTA learned from the Permanent Mission of Belarus to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva.

“We have taken note of the UNHCR report on activities in Europe. Protracted crises in the region and in the Middle East risk sparking an increase in the number of refugees and internally displaced persons. We also see risks that the new EU legislation on migration and asylum may lead to restrictions on access to asylum procedures and a reduction in protection guarantees," the statement noted.

"We are convinced that reforms in the field of migration and asylum must comply with international standards, be non-discriminatory in nature, and ensure dialogue with all interested countries in order to protect people fleeing wars and crises,” Belarus’ representative noted.
