Belarusian timber industry exports about 72% of its output

MINSK, 30 January (BelTA) - About 72% of Bellesbumprom's products are shipped abroad, Chairman of the Belarusian timber, woodworking, pulp and paper industry concern Bellesbumprom Aleksandr Pshenny said in an interview with BelTA.

The timber industry has maintained a momentum in export. In previous years the enterprises affiliated with Bellesbumprom were mostly focused on  the European market. Today the situation is somewhat different. The head of Bellesbumprom cited the following data: in 2021, the share of exports to the EU countries in the total exports of Bellesbumprom’s  amounted to almost 40%, CIS countries - more than 48%, with Russia holding less than 30%.

“On 4 June 2022, the European Union imposed a sweeping ban on the import of timber products from Belarus. The next package of European sanctions, adopted on 29 June 2024 significantly expanded the list of products of the Belarusian timber industry banned for import to the EU. In particular, cellulose, paper, multilayer cardboard and paper packaging, and furniture have fallen under the new ban,” Aleksandr Pshenny noted.

Thanks to the diversification efforts, Bellesbumprom Concern exported its products to the markets of 46 countries in 2024. In January-November of last year, Bellesbumprom’s exports rose by 7.6% year-on-year. The CIS countries accounted or 77% of total sales.

“Russia has become our key trading partner. Exports to the neighboring market account for 54.7% of the total exports of Bellesbumprom’s organizations. Export to Russia surged by 13% over the same period of 2023. In general, the top 5 sales markets are  Russia, China, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan,” lists the chairman of the concern ‘Bellesbumprom’ Aleksandr Pshenny.
