Belarus eager to advance cooperation with Russia’s  Buryatia in industry, healthcare, tourism

MINSK, 22 August (BelTA) - Belarus is keen to develop cooperation with Buryatia in industry, healthcare, and tourism, Chairman of the State Committee for Science and Technology Sergei Shlychkov, who coordinates cooperation with this Russian region, said during a meeting of the working group on cooperation between Belarus and Russia’s Buryatia, BelTA learned from the press service of the State Committee for Science and Technology.

Sergei Shlychkov emphasized the need to further increase mutual trade, especially in the current challenging economic conditions. He stated that the line-up of the Belarusian delegation was determined by the necessity to explore cooperation in the supply of special-purpose equipment (firefighting, utility, etc.). Sergei Shlychkov particularly noted that businesses are the key contributors to merchandise exports to Buryatia.

“Our task is to create conditions for the development of interaction between business of Belarus and Buryatia and to activate direct supplies in both directions," he noted adding that there is significant interest in further cooperation in the healthcare sector and tourism. Sergei Shlychkov expressed confidence that the agreements reached during the visit of the Belarusian delegation would give a new, powerful impetus to bilateral cooperation.

Head of Buryatia Alexey Tsydenov highlighted the impressive growth in trade turnover. "Over the past five years, trade in industrial and food products between Buryatia and Belarus has quadrupled, and the potential for growth remains," he stated. According to him, components are actively supplied to Belarus, while high-tech products are exported from Belarus. The market of Buryatia is already familiar with Belarusian dairy products, and Buryatmyasprom is increasing its supplies. “We have plenty of avenues for cooperation, and I am absolutely confident that trade will only grow, both in goods and in services. We see prospects for further collaboration,” Alexey Tsydenov emphasized.

"We have a strategic mutual interest. We have plans and they are ambitious,” Ulan-Ude Mayor Igor Shutenkov said. According to the mayor, the issue of organizing direct supplies of Belarusian products to Ulan-Ude is currently being actively worked out. Specific mechanisms of interaction, including logistics, have been discussed in detail. “In Ulan-Ude, 16 stores operate under the 'Belarusian Goods' brand. Moreover, we regularly hold fairs that are popular among our residents. Our side has offered Belarusian businesses attractive terms for leasing retail space in Ulan-Ude. This will be beneficial both for the city’s residents and for the development of our bilateral relations. Even now, we are helping our entrepreneurs to network and find common ground for further collaboration, enabling them to supply each other with products," he noted.

The mayor also recalled that in 2023 Ulan-Ude twinned with Tsentralny District of Minsk and a plan of joint activities until 2027 is already in progress. In the future, it is also planned to sign a sister city agreement with Partizansky District of Minsk.

The culmination of the working group meeting was the signing of a number of important documents aimed at strengthening ties. They include a memorandum of cooperation between the Association of Exporters and Importers of Buryatia and the Belarusian food industry concern Belgosphishcheprom; an agreement of intent between Minsk Dairy Plant No. 1 and the Tea Way company; cooperation agreements between the Semashko National Clinical Hospital and City Clinical Hospital No.6 of Minsk, and between the Buryatia Republican Clinical Cancer Center and the Minsk City Clinical Cancer Center.
