Baskov: Belarus does not consider hosting 2021 IIHF World Championship alone

MINSK, 14 September (BelTA) – Belarus does not consider holding the 2021 IIHF World Championship on its own, though it has the capacity to do it, Chairman of the Belarusian Ice Hockey Federation Dmitry Baskov told the ONT TV channel, BelTA has learned.

“The Belarusian Ice Hockey Federation has done enormous work to apply for co-hosting the championship together with Latvia. After winning the right to co-host the event, we started working on it together. However, now there are attempts in Latvia to politicize sport. As far as sport is concerned, we have good contacts with the Latvian Ice Hockey Federation, the International Ice Hockey Federation. There are no grounds today not to hold one of the best world championships,” Dmitry Baskov said.

According to him, Belarus does not consider the option to host the 2021 IIHF World Championship on its own. “However, we held such a great championship in 2014, therefore, we know that we will have enough capacity and infrastructure to host it again on our own,” the chairman of the Belarusian Ice Hockey Federation said.

The IIHF World Championship is scheduled to be co-hosted by Minsk and Riga on 21 May-6 June 2021.
