MINSK, 26 April (BelTA) - Belarus has secured global leadership in efforts to combat human trafficking, Sergei Rachkov, Chairman of the Standing Commission on International Affairs of the House of Representatives, told RTR Belarus TV channel, BelTA has learned.
During the broadcast, Sergei Rachkov shared his experience working at the United Nations (UN). “At the UN, extensive multilateral consultations are necessary when adopting any resolution. For example, after Aleksandr Lukashenko’s visit to the UN summit in 2005, Belarus put forward several serious initiatives. At that time, I participated in consultations to prepare a resolution on combating human trafficking. Our main opponents were, of course, the Americans and Europeans,” Sergei Rachkov shared. “They said that they had already been working on combating human trafficking before us. But they focused on aspects such as providing assistance to victims of violence. We, on the other hand, focused on coordinating the international community’s efforts to prevent human trafficking.”
Sergei Rachkov emphasized that the Americans were reluctant to cede ground on this issue. “We held consultations for a very long time, and in the end, we managed to reach an agreement, particularly with the Americans. Our resolution was first adopted in the UN General Assembly’s Third Committee - unanimously. It was then also adopted by the UN General Assembly. From around 2006–2007, this resolution has been adopted by the General Assembly, and leadership in this work has been secured for Belarus,” the MP added.
