MINSK, 24 June (BelTA) – Belarus has not yet received official responses from the EU countries to its requests for extradition of opposition figures Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, Valery Tsepkalo and Pavel Latushko, Belarus Prosecutor General Andrei Shved said answering journalists' questions, BelTA has learned.
“First, we have not received official responses yet, as far as I know. Second, the principle of reciprocity has always been essential to international relations, there is nothing new here. We honor our commitments and try to provide assistance on the principle of reciprocity. Thus, if we see that our partners do not meet us halfway, we reserve the right to act in the same way,” Andrei Shved said.
Extradition deadlines are not specified in this case, the prosecutor general noted. “If there is a legal framework, deadlines are set forth in some international treaties. However, as a rule, this matter is regulated by the legislation of the country where the procedures related to legal assistance provision are underway, unless this is specified by the international treaty itself,” he said.
