"On Point"
MINSK, 31 May (BelTA) - The two main candidates for the Polish presidency differ from each other only in their declarations, while in reality there are no significant differences between them, Polish journalist and publicist Piotr Korczarowski told Polish former judge Tomasz Szmydt in a new episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA's YouTube channel.
The conversation focused on the presidential elections in Poland, where Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski, representing the ruling Civic Platform (PO) party, and Karol Nawrocki, head of the Institute of National Remembrance, supported by the opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party, advanced to the second round. Tomasz Szmydt asked Piotr Korczarowski whether Rafal Trzaskowski could be called a pro-Brussels candidate and Karol Nawrocki a pro-American one.
“I believe that this is an artificial division for us, the voters, so that we could constantly participate in this game that presents us with some kind of choice. When we have a choice between the European Union and the United States. But I believe that there is no choice here, that these two options may differ from each other only in declarations, but in reality, they are no different at all. We need to look at foreign policy, not at statements made for voters,” said Piotr Korczarowski.
The Polish journalist pointed out that the Civic Platform fully supports the European Union. At the same time, the PiS does not officially support Brussels, but, “albeit with disgust”, signs everything that the EU proposes. As an example, Piotr Korczarowski cited the Green Deal strategy promoted in Europe, which sparked a wave of protests but was supported by the Law and Justice party.
“Later, after losing the election, Mateusz Morawiecki and the entire Law and Justice party took part in agricultural protests against the Green Deal, which they themselves had negotiated and signed. This confirms that they can pretend that they are not impressed, that they are against it, but in fact they support it. So both the Civic Platform and the PiS are in favor of Poland's membership in the European Union,” the journalist is convinced.
The same, he added, is true about Poland's membership in the North Atlantic Alliance. Both the Civic Platform and the PiS support the presence of American troops in Poland and advocate participation in all possible American operations and wars around the world.
“Summing up, we can say that there are no differences between the global interests of the PiS and the Civic Platform. These differences are simply presented to us so that we constantly live under the illusion that we have some kind of choice. We have no choice because, in the end, they adopt the same plans and have the same approaches when it comes to key, fundamental, and crucial international decisions,” Piotr Korczarowski said.
