MINSK, 22 March (BelTA) – The incursion into Kursk Oblast showed that Russia should pay the key attention to border troops, Russian military observer of the Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper, retired colonel Viktor Baranets said in a new episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
Discussing Vladimir Putin's instruction to the Russian military to create a “security belt,” Viktor Baranets said:“It will be a multi-layered military ‘pie’ on the border. We will draw on the experience of the special military operation and the failures we have allowed.”
“We have the border service. After the Kursk tragedy, we came to the conclusion that we need to rebuild the border troops. This means tanks, APCs, airplanes, drones, and so on. This is the main conclusion. So border troops will be rebuilt. The outposts will be supported by special regiments. They will consist of motorized rifle, tank and artillery regiments, and so on. As soon as an outpost detects movement and gives the signal of 'first engagement', these regiments will rush to help,” the military observer said.
He stressed that it is important to pay serious attention to the border defense line. “This is, of course, the most dense minefields, round-the-clock UAV reconnaissance service, all the best equipment to detect the approaching enemy and his attempt to cross the border. Border defense should involve everything . Back in the day there was a state program worth of tens of billions to keep the border tightly defended,” Viktor Baranets said.
