From Radziwiłłs to decay: Historic 18th century Palace in Dyatlovo put up for auction

GRODNO, 12 February (BelTA) - Radziwiłł Palace, a rare example of Baroque and Rococo architecture, a historical and cultural heritage site of the Republic of Belarus, Category 2, has been put up for auction.

The history of the palace in Dyatlovo dates back to the mid-18th century, BelTA learned from the Dyatlovo State Museum of History and Local Lore. “In 1751, a stone building was constructed with funds provided by Dominik and Mikołaj Radziwiłł; the architect is believed to be Domenico Fontana. The estate complex included the palace, outbuildings, and a park," the museum noted.

The palace was a two-story rectangular building on a high foundation with a tall hipped roof. Flanking it were three-tiered towers with pyramidal roofs. The pediment of the main facade features surviving ornamental and heraldic sculpture: a stucco coat of arms of the Radziwiłł princes, portrait high reliefs, garlands, draperies, and more. The building is encircled by entresols and finished cornices. a lavish English-style park was laid out around the palace at the end of the 18th century. The park was adorned with bridges, gazebos, and pavilions.

The palace features an enfilade layout. At its center was a two-flight staircase leading to a grand, two-story-high reception hall. Beneath the building were cellars with barrel vaults and a boiler room that heated the palace through internal flues.

"In the late 18th century, Franciszka Radziwiłł, a daughter of Mikołaj Radziwiłł's [the owner of Dyatlovo] married Stanisław Sołtan, who bought out Dyatlovo from his father-in-law. Stanisław Sołtan was the Court Marshal of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and was an opponent of Russian expansion. During the uprising led by Tadeusz Kościuszko, he was arrested and spent about a year in solitary confinement in the Smolensk dungeons. After Stanisław Sołtan’s death, Dyatlovo passed to his son Adam Sołtan, a colonel in the Polish army. Following Adam Sołtan’s participation in the 1830–1831 uprising, his estate in Dyatlovo, including the palace and folwark, was confiscated,” the museum said.

During the Kastus Kalinouski uprising of 1863, the Dyatlovo Palace was used as a military hospital. It was later converted into barracks for cavalry troops. In the early 20th century, the palace housed a two-year teacher training school, and in the 1930s, it became a girls’ orphanage. In the orphanage workshop, the girls made curtains and sewed various small items. They also prepared lunches for the seven-year school and worked in the vegetable garden. In the post-war years, the Radziwiłł Palace building housed a medical facility.

As BelTA previously reported, the former palace in Dyatlovo has been put up for auction. The starting price is two base rates (1 base rate = Br45). Mandatory conditions for buyers include signing a preservation commitment (within 30 days); developing project documentation (within 1 year); carrying out reconstruction or major repairs and putting the building into operation (within up to 5 years); and maintaining these obligations in the event of resale.

Another historically rich property is up for sale in Grodno Oblast - the former Bokhvits family estate in Volkovysk District. Located in the agrotown of Podorosk on the shore of a picturesque lake, the estate comes with a smithy, a pavilion, and outbuildings.
